Once you've installed VM Backup, the next step is to launch the console and start setting it up.
- Launch VM Backup and when the window pops up, select [This Machine] and click [Connect]. This will take you through the 3 quick setup steps, which are detailed further in this article.
- Next, simply add your Host. Go to [Setup] > [Hosts] and click on [Add Host]
Hyper-V LOCALHOST If you have installed VM Backup on a Hyper-V host, you will notice that it's already been added automatically to the console
Hyper-V Standalone or Cluster Insert the required details (IP, username and password) in order to add your host/s. In the case of a Hyper-V Failover Cluster, enter the details for 1 of the hosts, the others will be added automatically
VMware ESXi Insert the required details (IP, username and password) in order to add your host/s
VMware vCenter Insert the required details (IP, username and password) in order to add your host/s. Please note that your VM Backup, your primary backup location as well as your hosts must all be located onsite.
Note: If your vCenter is managing hosts in multiple sites, note that this is not supported and you will require a vCenter located at each of these sites. - To license the hosts, simply follow the guide here.
- Select your primary backup location. Go to [Setup] > [Backup Locations] > [Add Backup Location]
A wizard will give you an option for a [Physical Drive] or a [Network Path]
If selecting a [Physical Drive], simply select the Drive Letter and subfolder (optional) where you want to place your backup data, then click [Finish]
If selecting a [Network Path], enter the network path to your share, and the credentials to connect, then click [Finish]
Then simply drag and drop the VMs from the list on the left hand side over to the newly added backup location, then click [Save Changes]
Note: Each VM can be assigned to only one Backup location at any one time, but different VMs can be configured to go to different Backup Locations - To schedule your VM backups, go to [Setup] > [Backup Settings] > [Schedule Settings]. You can create a new backup schedule by clicking on [Add Backup Schedule]
Here, select your recurrence pattern (weekly or monthly), then choose the time, and the days of the week you wish the schedule to run on. You will also see a quick preview on the right hand side showing when your schedule is going to run. When ready, click [Save] and the new Schedule will show up in the Schedules configuration screen.
Lastly, drag and drop the VMs into the backup schedule. VMs can be assigned to multiple Backup Schedules. - You're all set! Either wait for your backup schedule to kick off at the pre-configured time, or go ahead and start a backup manually by going to [Backups]. Select the checkboxes next to the VM(s) you want to backup, then click [Take Backup]. Backup progress can then be monitored in the Dashboard.
